SEGA games started life as a manufacturer of hardware gaming platforms - the most famous of which was the Mega Drive, whose main competitor was the might Super Nintendo entertainment system. SEGA needed a character to compete with Nintendo's Mario, and in 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog was introduced into SEGA games, and for the next 5 years was a runaway success, appearing not only in his own games, but featuring in others as well.
SEGA's other main business activity is the famous SEGA games arcade machines which can be found in thousands of amusement arcades, pubs and clubs all over the world. In 2001 SEGA dropped the home hardware platforms, leaving Sony and Nintendo to fight the supremacy battle on their own. SEGA games has concentrated its business mainly on developing software for third party gaming platforms, and SEGA games always feature strongly in the top ten gaming charts.
As independent publishers of games, SEGA are able to develop and promote their games on any hardware platform they choose, and supply software for all three main players of Sony, Nintendo and X-Box. Part of the expansion of SEGA games is concentrated on producing games to tie in with major film releases, and this provides a lucrative extra source for revenue for this highly successful company.
