About the National Association of Toy & Leisure Libraries
Ever since the very first toy library was opened in 1967 by Jill Norris, these centres have offered a valuable community resource that enables families to borrow toys from local toy libraries.
Founded as The Toy Libraries Association in 1972, The National Association of Toy & Leisure Libraries (NATLL) is the national body for toy and leisure libraries throughout the UK. The charity was set up to not only support existing facilities, but to promote the development of new libraries and to raise awareness of the importance of play.
Toy libraries can be found throughout the UK - often staffed by volunteers - offering people the choice of 1000 centres where toys can be borrowed for a small, nominal fee. In some cases, toys are even available for free. Following the success of the toy libraries, the NATLL launched 'leisure libraries' in 1988 that provide recreational facilities for adults with learning difficulties and their families.
The Good Toy Guide
NATLL was behind the excellent Good Toy Guide. Published annually, this comprehensive guide contained a wealth of information about toys and including some fascinating and revealing reviews of toys from many different makers, covering several age categories.
The 2009/2010 edition was the final printed guide, although in January 2012 Dr Amanda Gummer announced that it would make a revamped, online comeback featuring regularly updated content.
