Melissa and Doug Toys focus on play value with added educational worth and the See and Spell wooden board game is no exception. The game provides an ideal early literacy opportunity and has the benefit of being self checking and easy to complete. The letter shapes are cut in to each side of 8 word boards and the child can learn to complete the words initially by fitting shapes into the board and later by recognising sounds and letters. The adult is then able to extend that activities in any one of a number of ways, suggestions for which are included on the back of the set.
The Melissa & Doug See and Spell game has 8 illustrated boards and over 50 letters. Children learn to recognise the pictures and see the word spelt out alongside them. They can practise initial sounds, look for vowels, vowel sounds and letter blends and explore more complex literacy skills by using the letters as stand along learning tools. Adults can help them to explore alternate beginnings to the words such as using the '-ish' end of the fish board and replacing it with dish or wish.
The whole set is contained in a wooden storage tray making it tidy but easily accessible.
