As one of the oldest counties in England Berkshire is often known as 'Royal Berkshire', as it is home to Windsor Castle. The population currently stands at just over 250,000 and the main towns are Reading, Slough and Eton, all of which have interesting shopping centres with a good choice of toy shops, as well as all the usual multiple groups.
Many historic battles have been fought in Berkshire, especially Alfred The Great’s campaign against the Danes. The Berkshire Downs are a favourite spot for walkers, and the M4 Motorway and the River Thames both run through the county.
