Only 10 minutes walk from Edinburgh's Waverley station is one of the UK's oldest model shops, Harburn Hobbies. Situated on Leith Walk, Harburns is popular with local modellers, tourists and visiting personalities such as the performer Jimmy Osmond.
Well stocked with British trains '00' and 'N' gauge, railway DVDs, Scalextric, plastic construction kits, lots of various die-cast vehicles and dolls house furnishings, many models are on display, each with a label giving their description and price in smart illuminated cabinets.
Harburn Hobbies has been instrumental in commissioning a large number of limited edition models, many representing Scottish subjects. These have included wagons, coaches, locomotives and multiple units. 'Deltic' diesel locomotive D9003 "Meld" was one of the subjects commissioned from Bachmann - a natural choice as an original nameplate from the real loco adorns one of the shop's walls.
James Burns, a local professional sculptor and model maker produces rural buildings and a large range of accessories in 1/76th scale '00' exclusively for Harburn Hobbies. Known as 'Harburn Hamlet', these acclaimed ready made, ready coloured models are very popular. Too many to list here, they include wagon/lorry loads, small buildings, boats and accessories such as telephone kiosks and post boxes.
The Buildings Collection is only obtainable direct from Harburns, but the accessory ranges, Freight & Lineside, Country & Garden, Station & Street and Quayside Collections, are also sold by other model shops, distributed by Peco. Full details of Harburn Hamlet can be found on the Harburn Hobbies website.
In 2008, this Edinburgh model shop celebrated its 70th Anniversary and continues to operate a home and international mail order service, much easier for everyone nowadays with the world wide web.
