Huddersfield is a former mill town, and the textile industry has left the town with an abundance of beautiful Victorian architecture. It has over 1500 listed buildings, amongst them the Railway station which was once described as having ‘the finest façade of any similar building in the country’. Overlooking the town is the conspicuous Victoria Tower which was built to mark Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee Year, and a bronze statue of Huddersfield born Harold Wilson stands at the entrance to St.Georges Square.
Huddersfield toy shops feature in the recent shopping centre developments, which have improved the quality and quantity of shops. Piazza, Kingsgate and Packhorse are the main shopping areas, with plenty of other specialist shops in-between. Films, televisual arts and music feature highly in Huddersfield’s cultural events.
