As the capital city of Devon, Exeter successfully manages to combine a mix of historic buildings and a modern shopping environment - including a generous mix of independent and major toy shops.
The splendid Cathedral dates from the 12th century, and is built on the camp of the Roman Army’s Augustan Legion. The towns’ population of 110.000 is supplemented at term times by a student population of 8.000 at the imposing Exeter University. Apart from other historic buildings such as Mol’s Coffee House and the Guildhall, the River Exe meanders its way through the cities lower region, and feeds the historic Exeter canal which re-joins the river at Turf Locks. Only a few miles away from Exeter are glorious beaches to the South, and the amazing Dartmoor National Park to the West.
Recent redevelopment of part of the city has produced the award winning Princesshay Shopping Centre. Combined with the older but revitalised Guildhall centre, Exeter now has a shopping area to rival the best in the country. Exeter’s toy shops are a mix of the multiple groups, and some interesting independent retailers, where you can always expect to find something new and different. No wonder the West Country as a whole is England’s fastest growing region.
